"When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world."
-John Muir

The Kennecott Nature Center of Murray provides opportunities for thousands of children from Murray School District and selected Granite fourth-grade classes to enjoy observing and learning about nature up close and hands on. Dedicated in September 1999, its mission is to enrich our community through an appreciation of nature and to foster stewardship of our natural resources. The 1600 square foot classroom-like Center is nestled on the second largest weland site of the Jordan River at 5044 S. Lucky Clover Lane (approx.5100 South and 800 West) in Murray, Utah. This location is a peaceful, natural spot preserved in an urban setting that overlooks a beautiful bend in the river.

Through a generous initial donation from Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation, the efforts of the Murray Education Foundation, and the assistance of many community donors, the dream for this environmental education center was realized. It is a unique partnership with Murray School District, Murray City and Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation working together to manage the costs of upkeep, staff and operation.

An Advisory Board consisting of educators and community members provide direction for policies, fundraising, and specific educational agendas. Staff consists of Judith Payne, Program Coordinator, who may be reached at (801) 270-5580 or jpayne@mury.k12.ut.us.

The Nature Center is generally open for scheduled classes during the Murray District school year from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00p.m. It is not open to the general public, however, groups wishing to use the Center for environmental education purposes after school hours may contact the Murray Community Education Office at (801)264-7414. A minimal fee for an on-site manager will be required, and applicants will be advised of the Center's policies and procedures.
